Step I Vocabulary study (Section B: 1a)
Show a local transportation map to students. Help them to identify signs of: bus stop, bus station, train station, subway station, highway, etc.
Call attention to the pictures in activity 1a.
T: Look at the pictures. What does each sign mean? Match the words with the pictures.
After students have finished, check the answers.
Note:
Bus stop is different from bus station.
bus stop: a place at the side of a road, where buses stop for passengers
bus station: a place where buses start and finish their journeys
Step II Pairwork (Section B: 1b)
T: Sometimes, we use more than one kind of transportation to get to school. For example, first you walk to the bus station, then take the bus to the school. Do anyone in our class use two or more kinds of transportation? Hands up!
Ask two students to read the sample conversation in activity 1b.
T: Suppose you use two kinds of transportation to get to school. Now work in pairs and tell each other how you get to school.
Ask several pairs to demonstrate their conversations.
Step III Listening and Speaking (Section B: 2a 2b 2c)
This step provides listening and oral practice with the target language.
T: You will hear a conversation between Thomas and Nina. Thomas asks Tina some questions. What does he want to know? Before I play the tape, read the questions given. Then listen and check the things that Thomas wants to know.
Play the tape. Students listen and check the questions.
Play the tape again, let them repeat the questions:
Where do you live?
How do you get to school?
T: Now look at the two routes in activity 2b. How does Nina get to school? Listen again and check 1 or 2.
Play the tape a third time. Check the answer.
Then get students work in groups of four and talk about how Nina gets to school with next, then and finally.
T: Now let’s do more practice with the target language. Suppose we are going to the following places in our town. How can we get there?
If possible, hang a map of your city on the wall. Write the following places on the Bb.
the nearest library, hospital, zoo, Heping road, No. 12 middle school, post office, etc.
Then ask different students how they get to different places.
